Recover Guyana and partners brave rain to plan seeds of change on Earth Day
GEORGETOWN, GUYANA — In celebration of Earth Day 2025, Recover Guyana, in collaboration with Scotiabank Guyana, Policy Forum Guyana, iPlant, the Rotaract Club of the University of Guyana and High Commission of India to Guyana, hosted its annual flagship event under the theme “Konnect with Earth,” aligning with the global Earth Day theme: “Our Power, Our Planet.”
Held at the Indian Monument Garden, the event welcomed committed environmental representative from state agencies, civil society organizations, corporate partners, and youth-led environmental groups— despite a rainy morning. The strong turnout reflected the shared passion for building a sustainable future and protecting the environment through hands-on action and community engagement.
The event was honored by the presence of His Excellency Dr. Amit Telang, High Commissioner of India to Guyana, and Ms. Jane Miller OBE, British High Commissioner to Guyana. Their participation highlighted the vital role of international collaboration in advancing grassroots climate action and supporting local environmental initiatives.
A standout moment of the event was a peaceful and reflective yoga session, hosted by the High Commission of India, Georgetown, Guyana. This session reminded attendees of the vital connection between personal well-being and the health of our planet. Yoga on Earth Day served as a powerful symbol of balance, unity, and harmony with nature.
One of the most symbolic and impactful activities of the day was tree planting, which was an integral part of the celebration. Attendees participated in planting trees across the garden, reinforcing their commitment to reforestation and climate action. Miss Earth Guyana 2019, Faydeha King, also made a
meaningful contribution to the day’s activities through her project iPlant, which distributed kitchen garden starter kits to patrons. This initiative encouraged attendees to begin their own sustainable food journeys at home, reinforcing the message that environmental action starts in our backyards.
Dr. Omesh Balmacoon, First Vice President of Recover Guyana, remarked, “Even the rain couldn’t wash away the determination we saw today. Our power lies in our people, in our purpose, and in our shared planet. Earth Day must inspire us to act boldly every day — in our homes, in our communities, and in
our policies.” The event closed with renewed energy, shared purpose, and a collective commitment to protect the planet—one action at a time.
