$4.2B in contracts signed for road works in Reg. 6

Kaieteur News- The Ministry of Public Works on Wednesday signed approximately $4.2 billion in contracts for a number of infrastructure works for communities in Region Six.

According to information provided by the Regional Democratic Council (RDC) of Region Six, the simple yet significant signing ceremony took place at the Berbice High School in New Amsterdam, which was overseen by Minister of Public Works, Juan Edghill and his team.

The projects which are for the upgrading of community roads in the region saw a total of 293 contracts signed.

Notably, the RDC said that contracts were awarded to small and emerging contractors most of whom are females.

The Regional Administration further reported that Minister Edghill at the ceremony “highlighted that the contracts fall under what he described as ‘fixed-rate contracts’ which are designed to benefit small contractors by allowing them to bid on projects valued at $16 million or less. He noted that this approach not only empowers small and young contractors but also fosters stronger community engagement during infrastructure development.”

This publication understands that the Public Works Ministry has been rehabilitating and constructing roads across the country to enhance not only their conditions but also improve the accessibility of residents living in those communities.

To support its various road programmes for this year, the ministry was allocated over $50 billion from the national budget.
