Dear Editor
I often see reports of women being killed by their spouses, the police are determined to solve domestic violence, but despite their efforts, many women don’t support the police. I’d like to share a story told by a senior superintendent officer. There was a driver of a regional chairman of west Demerara who used to hit his wife. She would go to the police station every fortnight, and the police would act and arrest him.
However, the woman would return the very next day to the station and plead for her husband’s release, saying he was intoxicated and didn”t know what he was doing. Their children also wanted him back home. This went on for several fortnights, so one day when She came, the police told her to sit on the bench until next morning. That same fortnight, a new police officer took over the station. His name was Eustace De Abreu 5020 AK the fox.
He saw the woman on the bench and asked, “what is this woman doing here?” the sergeant replied “that woman is only wasting our time, sir.
Her man would domestically abuse her, and by morning, she’ll come back and plead for him to be let go. This has been happening for months.” DeAbreu then ordered the sergeant to bring the man in while they took a full statement from the woman. Upon the man’s arrival, the police arrested him and sent the woman home. The next morning, the chairman couldn’t find his driver, so he went to his house. This was when he learned that the police had locked up his driver.
The chairman then told the woman “Lets got to the station:” In those days the regional chairman was like Mr. Burnham sons, the corporal then informed the chairman about what happened. The chairman then asked for Mr. DeAbreu who also explained what transpired.
The corporal then informed the chairman that there isn’t anything he can do-the driver had to go to court, as the magistrate would decide on further action. The wife then decided to tell the corporal that”| lied on my husband. He isn’t a bad man. I was only trying to frighten him.” The police then took the statement from her and charged her for public mischief or false accusations. The police later released the driver. The wife was sent to the La Penitence police station on Saturday afternoon, appeared in court on Monday, was fined $10, and sent away.
I was told that the wife never went back to the station to report her husband again, he either stopped abusing her or she was being abused in silence, but Mr. Eustace DeAbreu tried to fix domestic abuse.
Sincerely,
Frank DeAbreu
