Dear Editor,
History will be made with the imminent commissioning of the multi-purpose stadium in Anna Regina, Region 2. This modern facility, the first of its kind in Essequibo will become the pride and joy for all of us; but more gratifying for our sporting personalities, both past and present.
As I reflect on our rich history, three cricketers stood out as the beacon and brand of Essequibo’s cricket. The trio are the late Courtney Gonsalves, Alfred Maycock and John Floyd; combining the artistry of relentless pace, all-round magic and brute force in that sequence. They have left an indelible legacy and has inspired many to chase their dreams even to this day.
It will be an honour therefore to have a Courtney Gonsalves bowling end,a stand named after Alfred Maycock and the John Floyd’s scoreboard as a fitting tribute to our cricketing heroes and symbols of Essequibo’s enduring sporting identity.
The late Dave Martin’s verse of ‘where are our heroes, show them to me’ still echoes in the wind, but can be filled in our hearts should the names of the trio inked at the stadium.
Yours faithfully,
Elroy Stephney
Former Essequibo Captain
