Man in court for assaulting CANU ranks
Kaieteur News- A 26-year-old man was on Thursday charged for allegedly assaulting two officers of the Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU) while they were arresting him at his Albouystown Georgetown home.
The defendant identified as Kevon Ridly appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court before Acting Chief Magistrate Faith McGusty. He was slapped with two counts of assault and two counts of possession of an illegal firearm with matching ammunition. Ridly pleaded not guilty and was granted bail in the sum of $310,000. He is expected to retune to court on April 11, 2025.
According to the prosecution the defendant willingly opened the door to his home and allowed the officers to conduct a search. During their search the officers did not find anything in the home which prompted them to conduct a search on Ridly and there they found a firearm and ammunition on his person. He allegedly resisted arrest during which he assaulted two of the CANU officers.
Meanwhile, the defence led by Attorney-at-law Dexter Smart told the court that on the day in question his client was at home with his family when he was approached by several CANU officers. The officers allegedly broke his client’s door and forced their way into his home. Ridly refused to allow the officers to search his home because they did not present a search warrant, and as result the officers assaulted him, the lawyer said. Ridly, according to the lawyer was forced to lay on the ground and he sustained several kicks to his face in the presence of his minor son, the lawyer told the court. He was later taken to CANU headquarters where he was allegedly further assaulted, the lawyer said.
Attorney Smart added that the officers claimed that they found a firearm with ammunition but his client reassured him that there are several eyewitnesses as well as CCTV footage that will show that he is innocent and that the officers took the firearm out of their possession and was trying to force him to touch it but he refused.
Magistrate McGusty granted Ridly $125,000 bail for each of the two counts of assault charge and $30,000 bail for each of the two counts of possession of a firearm and ammunition without a licence charge. Ridly was instructed by the court to report to Ruimveldt Police Station every first and third Friday of every month starting from April 4, 2025.
