Kaieteur News- A 25-year-old labourer was on Monday night stabbed to death by his stepfather during an argument at Karasabai Village, South Pakaraima, Region Nine.
The dead man has been identified as Jonnah Pedro who resides in Normandie, Brazil.
The suspect, identified as 45-year-old Michael Francis, is a resident of Rukumuta Village, South Pakaraima. He is currently hospitalized at the Lethem Regional Hospital after reportedly stabbing himself in the chest.
Police reported that Francis stabbed Pedro about his body around 19:30h.
According to a police statement, before the stabbing occurred Francis, his 53-year-old wife and 18-year-old daughter left their home at Rukumuta Village for Karasabai to collect their ‘cash grant’ which was due for distribution on Monday.
Pedro (the victim), who resided in Brazil, reportedly crossed the border to Guyana on Monday morning to also collect his cash grant. Upon his arrival at Karasabai, he met with his mother, stepfather and stepsister at the Region Democratic Council (RDC) office in Karasabai where the cash grant distribution was taking place.
Thereafter, they all went to a nearby shop where they started to consume alcohol. However, at about 17:00h, they went to the home of Quincyann Albert, a 34-year-old housewife of Karasabai, and were sitting on wooden stools in the yard, talking.
“During their conversation, the suspect began to talk about his brother Moses Francis who was allegedly murdered in Rukumuta Village on 8th March 2025,” Police said.
Following that, Francis became very aggressive and started to curse and make threats to kill the person who murdered his brother.
“He was then rebuked by his stepson (Pedro) who advised him to calm down,” police said.
Reports are that Pedro’s advice angered Francis and in the presence of the victim’s mother and other relatives he allegedly whipped out a kitchen knife from his green haversack and stabbed his stepson in his head, right armpit and right shoulder.
Pedro ran a short distance away and fell.
Pedro’s mother (suspect’s wife) then raised an alarm and his 18-year-old sister, who was in the house at the time, came out and the two of them held onto Francis and tried to take the knife from him but he overpowered them.
Immediately thereafter, Francis stabbed himself in the chest.
Both Pedro and Francis were taken to the Karasabai District Hospital where Pedro died. Francis was then transferred to Lethem Regional Hospital where his condition is listed as serious. He is under police guard.
Investigations are ongoing.
