Hinterland Education must have a special place on the agenda of indigenous leaders
Dear Editor,
Hinterland education should have a special place on the agenda of our Indigenous leaders. Has there been a carefully structured motion or resolution relevant to hinterland education in any of our national forums?
Comparing the statistics, present and past, hinterland education needs to be studied in all its nuances to arrive at something more tangible.
Not only from the standpoint of books and buildings, notwithstanding their import.
Yes, how could we improve Hinterland education? Why don’t hinterland students excel even though we boast of spending millions on them?
Editor, it can be deduced from all indications that Amerindian children don’t socially adjust easily. In most instances, after writing the NGSA, they are forced to attend secondary schools OUTSIDE of their Indigenous communities. Right away, even if we don’t want to admit it, cultural differences between children are different and our Indigenous children are overwhelmed by dominant behavioral culture at school.
The negative cultural patterns take toll on their school life that in most cases result in poor grades. I challenge any social evaluator; a survey could verify this and the negative choices our children eventually fall prey to while attending secondary school outside their Indigenous communities.
Logistics will not allow for secondary schools in every community, but at least a school centrally located would allow for attendance from surrounding communities.
Presently the issue of secondary school students travelling to the Essequibo Coast to attend school is a case in point.
The parents of the community cluster of Capoey, Mainstay, Lima Sands and Tapakuma need to organise themselves to this end.
A secondary school centrally located for their children to help improve their standing at Exams. could be ideal support for these kids who could become an asset to their communities.
Too many of our children are becoming drop outs, another issue which I will deal with in another missive.
