Kaieteur News – A 31-year-old labourer who was charged with the attempted murder of a 22-year-old Guyana Defence Force (GDF) rank was remanded to prison on Wednesday.
The accused, Dexter McDonald called ‘Labba’ of Lot 73 Middle Walk, Buxton, ECD made his second court appearance at the Vigilance Magistrates’ Court before Magistrate Fabayo Azore, where the attempted murder charge was read to him.
He pleaded not guilty.
McDonald, while being in the company of another is accused of shooting Azim Khan multiple times about his body on May 6, 2024 at Lot 534 Block 8 Mon Repos ECD, during a home invasion.
According to Khan’s relative, the incident occurred between 12:30hrs and 13:45hrs. During an interview with Kaieteur News, the relative alleged that the bandits stole Khan’s phone, a gold chain, and $90,000 cash. The relative said too that on the day in question, the victim was at his aunt’s home where there was a family gathering.
The relative related that when Khan and others entered the kitchen of the house, they saw two unknown males, one of whom was wearing a hoodie. Khan put up a fight.
“When they come down, they end up go inside the kitchen and they saw the two persons in the house, as soon as my cousin (Khan) see, he attacked them, and he start defending himself,” the relative told Kaieteur News.
Following the scuffle, the relative said the suspects whipped out a firearm and shot Khan after realising that he was not going to stop fighting.
The bandits eventually made good their escape.
The soldier was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC), where he was placed in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and is currently being treated for his injuries and his condition is listed as critical.
McDonald is scheduled to return to court on June 20, 2024.
Meanwhile, McDonald who was arrested on May 17, 2024 was also charged with Robbery Under Arms (RUA) committed on Sharon Sarjoo, discharging a loaded firearm with intent, committed on Collin Rodney and two counts of Burglary committed on Junior and Roxanne Blair.
On Tuesday, McDonald made his first court appearance at the Vigilance Magistrates’ Court, before Magistrate Fabayo Azore, where the two counts of burglary charge and discharging a loaded firearm with intent charge was read to him.
He pleaded not guilty to the two counts of burglary charge.
The charge stated that McDonald while at Victoria, East Side Line, ECD, stole one HP laptop computer and two Samsung cell phones valued $201,000 from Junior Blair. He also stole two Samsung cell phones, cash and other items totaling $278,000, property of Roxanne Blair.
Further, McDonald is also accused of stealing one 9mm Taurus Pistol value $215,000 and 12 live rounds of 9mm ammunition, property of the Guyana Police Force (GPF). Police said that the stolen gun and ammunition were in Junior Blair’s possession at the time of the robbery.
Bail was denied and McDonald was remanded. He is scheduled to return to court on June 18, 2024 for these charges.
Meanwhile, McDonald was not required to plea to the discharging of a loaded firearm charge. He is expected to return to court on June 19, 2024.
