Seven in number they were
buckled in chopper way up in the sky
from Olive Creek to Arau, they flew with passions so high
far away towards the frontier with crew
duty had called to go they must
to protect and maintain sovereignty over Essequibo in whom we trust;
Making stops along the way
villagers watched with little dismay as chopper passed by up so high
Oh soldiers! you never did say a forever good bye, we wished you well to fulfill CIC’s command hereby;
With spinning blades lift off was perfect that day as the chopper lifted upwards in overcast skies to fly away
challenged by visibility on the rise
Oh soldiers! together you did cry ‘mission must be accomplished’ not knowing the ultimate price you were destined to pay in lieu of your demise;
Oh soldiers! To visit ranks, you were commanded to pay, camped at Olive Creek and Arau so far away with forests, mountains creek and trails the Cuyuni not far away running deep carrying with its flow many a tale;
Tragedy struck on that fateful day
the chopper fell like a bullet gone astray
blades falling silent beneath broccoli like canopy resting eerily as if comfy in total disarray
Oh soldiers! If only we knew it was you
death it was to carry five limp bodies to thy Father’s mansion with many a room;
Snatched away were five heroic servicemen
in perilous times
when country needed men to serve with pride and human sacrifice
a loss to motherland needing the brave and the bold
to defend our land and wealth an aggressor to our west who now doth loath;
Oh soldiers! Guyana weeps for you night and day
valiant heroes from noble origins you rose
with commitment and dedication never to delay
time served way beyond the call of duty
flags fluttering in wind at half-staff as though in sympathy
In many a way and in many a year shall we bow in homage to your sacrifice
Gone too soon having paid a heavy price
Five to fall too many, no replace will suffice
A Heroes Highway dedicated to you
a debt of gratitude nothing more will do.
Regards,
Clement James Rohee
