Dear Editor,
There is a reason why PPP supporters that constitute half of our population wanted former president Bharrat Jagdeo to become a third term president. There is a reason why he will remain the General Secretary of the PPP as long as he lives. There is a reason why he is the defacto President of Guyana and was allowed to handpick Irfaan Ali as the face of the presidency.
Foreign Affairs Minister Hugh Todd, Prime Minister, Mark Phillips and a host of government ministers and other functionaries were handpicked by Vice President Jagdeo. The reason is, Jagdeo will never recognise the Opposition as worthy of governing Guyana. Therefore, everything he does is to keep the PPP in power and continuously suppress the Opposition. He will use everything at his disposal no matter how nefarious it is, to crush the Opposition. Jagdeo did not stop at racist propaganda, corruption, the use of State violence and withholding of the national patrimony to weaken the Opposition. His new low is the undermining of Guyana’s sovereignty to keep the PPP in power.
Shadow Foreign Affairs Minister, Amanza Walton-Desir, an exquisitely beautiful Guyanese woman who is highly educated and intelligent with masterly oratory skills took to social media yesterday to lament Jagdeo’s shortchanging of the Opposition after they accepted an invite by the PPP government outside of Parliament to show a united front against Venezuela’s aggression towards Guyana’s sovereignty.
It did not occur to Ms. Walton-Desir that it was enough for the Opposition to release a statement of support and unity to protect our sovereignty. It didn’t occur to her as an experienced legal mind and a Member of the National Assembly to demand, not request an urgent parliamentary sitting to signal our support.
Like schoolchildren called to an assembly by the school’s department heads, they rushed to sit in the PPP’s lair to show a united front with their mortal political enemy. Ms. Walton sat in that very room with the government illuminating it with her infectious smile. A fortnight later, Jagdeo, it is reported, met with Venezuelan migrants and told them the Opposition is xenophobic. Ms. Walton who is expected to make a bid for Leader of the Opposition is now questioning why would Jagdeo meet with Venezuelan migrants and not invite the Opposition. I expected her to answer that question herself. She did not.
It is clear that the current Opposition is no match for Jagdeo and the PPP since it continues to demonstrate naivety in dealing with them. We cannot expect forty-nine percent of the population to repose confidence in us when the PPP continues to make rings around us while leaving our supporters in a pauperised state. I am not sure Roysdale Forde was at that meeting. If he weren’t, I intend to ask him why? I also intend to ask the exquisitely beautiful Opposition Member of Parliament for an interview. It is time the Guyanese people know if she truly has mettle.
Sincerely yours,
Norman Browne
