Dear Editor,
Life can be simple or it can be complex. What will the government do now? Venezuela stands with the Palestinians as the Venezuelan army increases its presence on our border in the western part of Essequibo. Will global politics be used to sacrifice our sovereignty? Will religion trump patriotism? We must be pragmatic and just in our views.
Firstly, our sovereignty is paramount. Venezuela may share the view of some leaders and past leaders of our country, but this is not enough to sideline the ICJ process. We must continue to fight for our land. Secondly, the large number of refugees from Venezuela are a security risk which must be contained and this must be done quickly. Moving everyone to a single location such as on our side of Ankoko island is important, and given Venezuela’s increasing military presence we must engage the aid of our allies in the US and UK. Our military presence must also increase with the aid of the military of our allies. Thirdly, we must respect the humanity and the value of innocent life on both sides of any conflict. Those who choose to fight will fight. Those who are innocent and choose not to be a part of war will avoid the conflict.
Guyana is a diverse nation which use to demonstrate tolerance and respect for opposing views. We must also recognize the injustice done to Israel. There was silence on what happened. Where was the government’s condemnation of the injustice done to Israel? After some delay a statement was finally issued by the PPP. The world hears Guyana’s voice of support for Palestinians, but the injustices done to the innocent civilians of Israel was initially ignored.
We must maintain a balanced and just view that values innocent life across the entire conflict. If we believe in morality and humanity, then we also believe that there is good to be found everywhere God’s breath exists. Covid-19 has been a stark reminder that the breath of life within us can be easily removed. We must embrace a just system that safeguards against evil and that ensures safety for those who deserve it.
Sincerely,
Mr. Jamil Changlee
Chairman
