THE SQUIRREL
It was the first time I saw a squirrel close up
It was on the rail of the patio deck
It was a magnificent little beauty of its world
Searching for tidbits with urgency.
I felt the urge to hold it, pet it, and enjoy
But in seconds he descended and was gone
I was left gazing at its investigatory ground
Marveling at its pleasant existence,
Or was I wrong in heart to reach out
To this little mystery of mine?
