Translation to Mr. Gladstone’s English
Dear Editor,
Please allow me/us a little space (not too much) to welcome Mr. Gladstone to our homeland, Guyana, and, at the same time, to extend an invitation to him—and all the Gladstone ancestors he will be apologizing for—to join our ‘Jumbi’ Jamboree.
This invitation comes from the African Guyanese Spiritual community. We understand that our Spiritual Works have directly caused Manager Gladstone’s ‘Jumbi’ to make his great-great-great grandchild come here to apologize for him. If this apology is about slavery—to say sorry for slavery on Plantation Success—for all the ancestors whose mutilated heads were raised in the air on pikes and left for vultures to feast on. If that is what he is apologizing for, Mr. Gladstone will have to talk to us, the descendants of the people his forefathers enslaved on that plantation.
Indian indentureship came as a consequence of the abolition of slavery. African Guianese were the ones who felt the blows from the whips on our backs; now the blows are to our mind in this 21st Century version of the same old plantation. Mr. Gladstone, we hope you understand that on behalf of your ancestors, you would be apologizing to African Guyanese and our own, those who come down from Quamina and his son Jack of the 1823 Revolution?
This is an invitation from African ‘Jumbi’ ancestors to all Guyanese ‘Jumbi’ ancestors to come celebrate with us—through this injunction we are serving on History. My name is Dolly—they say I’m bassidy, and that’s why the people call me Bassidy Dolly, the Guyana Rainforest Bag Lady.
