Dear Editor,
Manipur in far off India shares some parallels with our nation. This Indian State is multiethnic and has two major groups competing for resources. The Naga is the larger group and is split up into subgroups. The Kuki is the other major ethnic strain.
It is instructive to note that the ethnicities mentioned all fall under the general classification of Sudra. Among the Naga is to be found the Meitei with whom there’s ungoing conflict.
A disgusting trend found among these peoples is the use of gang violence and rape as a tool of revenging hurts.
Added to this is the vile use of social media to peddle halftruths and downright calumnies.
In tne extant case two women from the Kuki tribe were violently battered and raped in May last and it took two months of rioting and pillaging before the police could begin to take action. This was a supposedly revenge action albeit a proven false one.
Recently we had the matter of an allegation concerning the brutal rape/sodomising of a student. This matter was kicked around by officialdom and ended up with the alleged complainant making a disclaimer on social media. Were it not for the intervention of a group of women the matter could well have spiralled out of hand.
In Manipur a video of the violent rape went viral and this resulted in communal violence which has not been suppressed by law enforcement as yet.
It would appear that certain types have rape and sexual molestation etched in their DNA. Our society must work overtime to suppress the wanton abuse of our girls and women. We must work harder to ensure that all forms of violence against girls and women be put to an end.
Regards,
Cyril Walker
