Justice must go hand-in-hand: A reminder to Minister Robeson Benn

It is with great concern that I address the recent remarks made by Minister Robeson Benn of the Ministry of Home Affairs at the Guyana Police Force, 184 Anniversary, Wreath Laying Ceremony for Fallen Heroes. While his call for peace within the nation is commendable, it is crucial to remind the minister that peace and justice are inseparable. The recent case of the Indigenous schoolgirl who was subjected to a heinous crime highlights the urgent need for justice in our society. It is only through the pursuit of justice that true and lasting peace can be achieved.

The Importance of Justice:

Justice is not a mere concept; it is the backbone of any civilized society. It ensures that every individual, regardless of their background, is treated fairly and protected from harm. The case of the Indigenous schoolgirl is a stark reminder of the injustices that persist within our society. It is a tragedy that such a heinous act could occur, and it is the responsibility of the authorities to ensure that justice is served.

Addressing Injustice:

The PPP Government and Minister Benn, must take immediate and decisive action to address this injustice. It is not enough to simply call for peace without simultaneously demanding justice for the victims. The failure to hold perpetrators accountable sends a dangerous message to the entire nation that such crimes can go unpunished. This not only perpetuates a culture of fear but also undermines the faith of the citizens in the justice system.

Restoring Faith in the Justice System:

To restore public trust in the justice system, Minister Benn must work diligently to ensure that all cases of injustice are thoroughly investigated and the culprits brought to justice. This includes providing appropriate support to survivors, implementing necessary reforms within the Guyana Police Force, and ensuring that swift and fair trials are conducted. Furthermore, efforts should be made to raise awareness and educate the public on the importance of justice to foster a collective commitment towards a safer society.
