Dear Editor,
I recently read that the Dominican Republic attracts the highest percentage of tourists in the Caribbean, even as tourism declines elsewhere in the region.
A primary reason is that the Dominican Republic offers visitors a full cultural immersion; it features the most bed and breakfast facilities in the Caribbean, with over 30 per cent of tourists choosing these accommodations. Traditional resorts are increasingly losing appeal for millennials and Generation Z, who prefer more personalised experiences.
This trend highlights a significant opportunity for Guyana. Visitors consistently praise the wonderful Guyanese people, hospitality, and culture. While a retreat to historic and ethnic cultures has contributed to racial divisions, moving beyond this to focus on Guyana’s unique, collective cultural experience can build stronger communities and shape a unified identity. By embracing and promoting this cultural experience, Guyana can also attract more tourists looking for authentic travel.
Sincerely,
Daniel Singh
