Kaieteur News – President Irfaan Ali on Wednesday confirmed that Spanish would be a compulsory subject in the school system starting next term, which commences in September.
The President at a news conference told reporters that he had asked for a full assessment and has been advised that there is adequate capability, especially in the secondary level to have Spanish taught. Ali’s aim is for Spanish to be taught starting from Grade four or five.
“One of my greatest regrets now, that I have this responsibility for Guyana, is that I dropped Spanish when I was in Secondary School,” President Ali said while noting that he subsequently saw the importance of knowing a second language.
The President hopes that not only the school implements this but the private sector would also move towards having their employees trained in Spanish. “We also seek to launch an online platform so that any Guyanese that want to learn Spanish, can go on that platform and learn the language,” said President Ali
He added, “with us celebrating being the only English-speaking country within the South American continent, we have to realise too that we are a part of this continent that speaks Spanish.” President Ali went further to say that he believes, “we are going to do the future young people of our country, an injustice if we don’t point them into this direction. In addition, knowing a second language would be necessary if a person intends on being competitive internationally or want to land an international job.”
