…Kaliza Smith, Andrea Foster unfortunate
By Rawle Toney
Kaieteur Sports – It was a historic outing for Emanuel Archibald, with the country’s most prized senior sprinter winning his first international gold medal when he crossed the line ahead of the pack at the Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Games in El Salvador last evening.
Archibald crossed the line in 10.24s to win the heated contest and secure Guyana’s eighth Gold Medal at the CAC Games since the country started competing at the event in 1959.
It was a closely contested race, with Archibald narrowly defeating Jose Gonzalez from the Dominican Republic and Rikkoi Brathwaite from the British Virgin Islands, both of whom finished with a time of 10.26 seconds.
After careful examination of the photo finish, officials awarded Gonzalez the second-place position.
As the reigning national champion in the 100m, 200m, and long jump, Archibald adds the prestigious CAC gold medal to his collection of international accolades.
The Linden athlete’s achievement marks his first international gold medal, complementing his previous successes, which include a silver medal in the South American Championship 100m and a bronze medal in the South American Championship 4x100m relay.
Despite Archibald’s success, the second day of track and field at the CAC Games brought mixed results for Guyana.
Andrea Foster, known for her accomplishments in the 800m, fell short of securing a spot in the women’s 400m hurdles event.
Foster, a bronze medalist in the South American Championship 800m, finished at the back of the pack with a time of 59.37 seconds.
The race was dominated by Gianna Woodruff from Panama, who advanced to the finals with an impressive time of 55.49 seconds, while Valeria Cabrezas from Colombia secured (57.58s).
In the women’s 100m semifinals, Keliza Smith also narrowly missed out on a place in the finals.
She finished in third place in the second semifinal with a time of 11.68 seconds.
Smith’s time was ranked ninth among the athletes who did not directly qualify as top-two finishers.
