Dear Editor,
Kaieteur News – In KN’s edition of 6.29.2023, A. Khan did a chronological expose of ” A long history of alleged predatory behaviour by PPP Government ministers, others – Kaieteur News (kaieteurnewsonline.com). The data started from 2007 to present day. First thought that came to mind was, are we to believe it only started in 2007?
I explained my feelings about the present-day matter which involves the Minister as it relates to the hypocrisy of the two female Ministers who made statements. Stabroek News did not publish my letter and Kaieteur News axed most of it. Why did KN delete what I wrote? It is all in the public domain, where a Minister was engaged in an exchange with a former popular columnist of the very KN paper. Mr. Kissoon, wrote about “The other side of Reepu Daman Persaud is well known in Guyana and it certainly is not flattering. I will leave that for another discussion on this most controversial Hindu pandit who died several years ago.” K.N. 18/1/2015. And then further wrote–Freddie Kissoon replies to Vindhya Vasini Persaud – Kaieteur News (kaieteurnewsonline.com)
A.Khan did not seek to mention this particular (now deceased) Minister and honcho of the PPP. When it was a serious matter such as a then sitting Minister of Government’s alleged affair with his young staff; it should be the business of every right-thinking Guyanese and especially independent newspapers. Why are SN and KN afraid? Or are they also guilty of the Cover Down syndrome?
Is it because when it comes to violence especially against children, females and all vulnerable in our society, there is the culture of COVER DOWN—where victims are silenced? The late Sukree Boodram wrote “Breakout,” which dealt with the subject of Domestic Violence and Alcoholism in her life. The name of the book alone is self-explanatory, and she related why it is a necessity to deal with these topics. Last year on July 4th, someone who shares the same birthday called to wish me. This time though, she was upset as she related to me about the alleged assault of a sister that happened years ago. I asked her, why did you not come out in all these years and divulge this heinous sin and I received an earful of excuses. When will we collectively stop condemning and blaming the innocent victims, making them fearful of even saying that they are the real sufferers?
Domestic Violence is often protected by this code of silence and is COVERED DOWN! Rape and sexual abuse are enveloped in this protected shield of COVER DOWN. I asked the question in my axed letter as to why would someone do over and over what the Minister is accused of allegedly doing? We see why when even the papers protect some of the culprits. The #MeToo movement certainly skipped Guyana. I close with this gentle warning– you never know when one day, someone near and dear may be the next victim.
Yours truly,
N.Sahadeo
