Men’s Hockey team out of CAC Games despite impressive performance against Cuba

Kaieteur Sports – Guyana’s men’s hockey team displayed an impressive performance in one of their standout matches at this year’s Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Games, despite ultimately losing 3-5 to Cuba.

It was a tough outing for Guyana’s men’s hockey team at the CAC Games.

Andrew Stewart scored one of Guyana’s three goals against Cuba at the CAC Games Hockey Championship.

Guyana started the tournament with a 1-4 defeat to Trinidad and Tobago, followed by a surprising 2-3 loss to the home team, the Dominican Republic, placing them at the bottom of Pool B.

With two losses and unfavourable results in the group, the Guyanese men were left to play for pride against the defending champions, Cuba.

Carlos Consuegra opened the scoring for Cuba in the third minute, but Guyana responded swiftly with goals from Jamarj Assanah and Simeon Moore, taking a 2-1 lead.

The score remained the same heading into the second quarter, but the Cubans increased the pressure, applying relentless attacks on the young Guyanese team. This offensive pressure resulted in goals from Consuegra (28′, 29′), Freddy Duanny (22′), and Iraidys Calderon (24′).

Trailing 2-5 and needing a victory to end the tournament on a high note, Coach Robert Fernandes’s team managed to find another goal from Andrew Stewart in the penultimate period.

However, the final 15 minutes of play offered little excitement from both sides and when the final whistle blew, it was Cuba celebrating another victory, maintaining their unbeaten record.

Cuba will face Mexico, the second-placed team in Pool B, while Trinidad and Tobago will match skills with the impressive and undefeated Barbados team, which topped Pool A.

Guyana’s highest placement in the CAC Men’s Hockey championship was fourth place in the 2018 games held in Colombia.

Trinidad and Tobago remains the only English-speaking Caribbean team to have won the men’s CAC tournament, securing victory in 2002 when they defeated Barbados 3-2.

Barbados has earned the bronze medal twice (1982, 2010) and finished fourth on four occasions (1986, 1993, 1998, 2014).

Except for the 2002 tournament and the 2010 edition when Mexico emerged as champions, Cuba has dominated the championships since 1982, securing victory in all other competitions.
