– Nomination closed yesterday; Elections set for March 14
Kaieteur News – Dr Karen Pilgrim (A.A), and president of the Guyana Table Tennis Association, Godfrey Munroe are listed as the front-runners to contest for the position of President of the Guyana Olympic Association (GOA).
Yesterday was the deadline for nominations from Associations affiliated with the GOA, ahead of their crucial March 14 elections, where, for the first time in almost three decades, the important sports institution will have a new president.
Dr Pilgrim, who served as Vice President of the GOA since 2008, was recognized in 2017 for her sterling contribution to sports in Guyana with a National Award – the Golden Arrow of Achievement.
A Doping Control Officer since 2009, Dr Pilgrim is currently a Member Country Representative for Guyana on the Caribbean RADO; a position she has held since 2015 and was elected to the post of RADO Executive Committee Member in 2016.
Pilgrim is a Doctor in Veterinary Medicine and functioned as Chef de Mission at several Commonwealth and Olympic Youth Games and the London 2012 Olympic Games.
Meanwhile, Munroe, who holds a Master’s in Sports Management from the University of Louvain, like Dr Pilgrim, is a serving Vice President of the GOA.
A Project and Administrative Manager at the Ministry of Education, Munroe, known as a three-time national Table Tennis Champion, was elected president of the GTTA in 2012 after acting in the capacity following the death of former Commissioner of Police, Henry Green, who was at the time of his passing, heading the local table tennis governing body.
When contacted by Kaieteur News, a number of associations confirmed either Munroe or Pilgrim as their choice for president, w
hile several other notable sports personalities and administrators were nominated for other positions within the GOA.
The March 14 elections are set to be one of the most anticipated in the GOA’s history since an age-limit clause in the new constitution prevents current president Kalam-Juman Yassin from seeking re-election.
The GOA’s general council, on June 16, 2022, after much deliberation, voted 29 – 13 to include the 70-year age limit for Executive Committee members.
The decision ultimately ended the 75-year-old Yassin’s reign as GOA president, a position he has held since 1996.
Yassin currently serves with Charles Corbin, Dr Karen Pilgrim and Godfrey Munroe as his Vice-presidents, with Hector Edwards as Secretary General and Assistant Secretary Deion Nurse.
