Dear Editor,
As Burnham’s birthday (February 20, February 21 for me, a link in our stars) approaches, along with the annual Mash events, his brainchild, those affected by his disease have started and will continue to say glowing things and ‘pay tribute’ to this ‘great man’, all of which perpetuate a great lie in our history.
But Forbes Burnham must be remembered for who/what he was: a DICTATOR. Burnham destroyed the livelihoods of a generation of Guyanese, affecting subsequent generations and left a mark of ethnic insecurity on the minds of both African and Indian Guyanese which continues to be used even today by political leaders come time for national elections. The PNC would like to have Guyanese believe the historical lie they have about Guyanese. In a few days or so, we’ll see them printing their ream of rubbish lifting the man who set Guyana back 50 years and severely damaged our culture in his mad effort at retaining power for life via socialist/communist dogma, as is happening in Russia, China, Venezuela, North Korea.
Burnham was so bad even his siblings rejected him and warned Guyanese about him, but they didn’t listen even after he started beating them with his rigged elections and destructive economic policies. Burnham and his PNC are what society can easily classify as a social disease, the dreaded puppet and machinery of Britain’s successful effort to set our country against itself as it did India.
Britain has a lot to be ashamed of regarding Guyana, and it would be helpful for them to acknowledge their crimes against Guyanese. To be clear, I see them as essential, integral to Guyana’s development today, but they became rich on the blood of our ancestors and are indeed the source of the ethnic strife that has divided us as a nation. They could rightly say of themselves: Job well done.
Yours faithfully,
Craig Sylvester
