Dear Editor,
Late last week, Hon. Minister Susan Rodrigues indicated that Mayor Ubraj Narine allegedly engaged in land fraud by receiving a government issued house lot while being the owner of “properties” elsewhere. While it is of concern that any political figure “gaming the system” to receive preferential treatment is quite alarming, the fact that Minister Rodrigues used the CH&PA database to investigate a political opponent is even more alarming.
On the face of it, it appears that the Minister misused that database for political gain, which should never occur. If the Minister is conducting such an investigation into persons on a whole that have received government issued land against the Ministry policies, the following should be made public:
Further, why hasn’t the Ministry done any enforcement work with regards to persons obtaining government issued lands and then selling them at significant higher prices? If they have, they should publish this data. Why hasn’t the Ministry done any work with regard to repossessing lands that have been abundant by the recipients? In the Diamond, Tuschen and many other housing schemes, there can be found a lot of land that have not been developed by the recipients for the purpose it was issued for by the Ministry.
The government spend my money, as a taxpayer, and develop these housing schemes and yet I cannot receive a house lot because I have another property that would have been obtained by another means outside of the government’s housing lot programme is quite unfair. I am waiting for over a decade now for an allocation and I am now wondering if I haven’t received an allocation because I have another property via inheritance. I call on the president to change this policy, which will be in line with his one Guyana vision, so that all Guyanese can benefit from at least one government house lot allocation regardless of if they have another property that was obtained from outside the government housing programme.
Regards,
M. Perry
