Perhaps one of the most popular Christmas songs among children is Old Toy Trains. Personally, I believe that even though Jingle Bells is quite popular also among the little ones, Old Toy Trains just may be the one with the edge over Jingle Bells.
Particularly popular among nursery age children, Old Toy Trains can be heard at almost every Christmas School Concert. It is arguably a timeless classic that has stood the test of time in Guyana.
Old Toy Trains is a Christmas song written and originally recorded by Roger Miller; an American singer songwriter. The song was released in late 1967 as a single for Smash Records, a subsidiary of Mercury Records.
It is said that Roger Miller wrote Old Toy Trains in 1967 for his son; Dean Millerand had it released on Smash Records later in the year.
Over the years, many artistes have covered Old Toy Trains. From the legendary Glen Campbell, The Slater Brothers, to Toby Keith among others, have over the years brought their own interpretation to the song. However, the version that is most popular here in Guyana is the one done by Greek singer Nana Mouskouri.
The southing silky voice of Nana Mouskouri sails effortlessly on top of the backing acoustic guitar riffs, as she sweetly sings the melody of this timeless classic. Children love it and so do adults. It is the ultimate Christmas song for a family sing-along.
As you gather with your family this Christmas, please take a moment to sing in cheerful unison the lyrics to Old Toy Trains below:
Old toy trains, little toy tracks
Little toy drums coming from a sack
Carried by a man dressed in white and red
Little boy, don’t you think it’s time you were in bed?
Close your eyes
Listen to the skies
All is calm, all is well
Soon you’ll hear Kris Kringle and the jingle bells
Bringin’ old toy trains, little toy tracks
Little toy drums coming from a sack
Carried by a man dressed in white and red
Little boy, don’t you think it’s time you were in bed?
Close your eyes
Listen to the skies
All is calm, all is well
Soon you’ll hear Kris Kringle and the jingle bells
Bringin’ old toy trains, little toy tracks
Little toy drums coming from a sack
Carried by a man dressed in white and red
Little boy, don’t you think it’s time you were in bed.
