– Johnson, McKenzie seal trophy with 2 – 0 win
Kaieteur News – Guyana clinched the Inter Guiana Games (IGG) football title following yesterday’s 2 – 0 win over Suriname at the National Track and Field Centre.
The Lady Jags went into the match with confidence after they had opened the two-day championship with a 2 – 1 win, thanks to Jalade Trim and Aliyah Vancooten.
In the second match, Guyana and Suriname played a goalless first half at the West Demerara facility, but just after the break, Sandra Johnson (48’) sent the home since in the lead.
Amanda McKenzie’s goal in the 63rd minute was the icing on the cake for the young Lady Jags, as they held on for the win.
The IGG returning for the first time since 2017, only saw women’s football action, contested between Guyana and Suriname.
Football was the first sport played at the IGG in 1967, with the Dutch-speaking country holding the edge over Guyana in win ratio. (Rawle Toney)
