Dear Editor,
Please permit me space to express my concerns for the traveling public. Since the advent of COVID, I seldom travel much on minibuses however I have started using this mode of public transportation again since I don’t have the luxury of utilising a private vehicle. My matter of concern is that I have observed that most of the minibuses don’t have conductors any longer. It must be noted that some of the drivers exercise due care for the safety of their passengers by carrying one passenger short in the front seat as this will enable him/her in opening, and closing the door thus ensuring the safety of its passenger.
However, some of the drivers filled their buses to the maximum and even with overload. These drivers really and truly believe that it is the duty of the passengers to operate as Conductors in opening and closing the door and in most cases, are very hostile towards the passengers, stop and pull off without ensuring the safety of the passengers and can be very rude when the passengers aren’t able carrying this extra task. With all of the interventions that the Government is doing in keeping the costs down, these hostile drivers are making all sorts of claims such as spare parts are expensive, fuel costs are high, conductors and stealing their money etc.
Mr. Editor, with all of these interventions that the Guyana Government has and continues to make to keep the costs down. The traveling public is made to suffer at the hands of these unscrupulous drivers. In view of the above, I now call upon the Honorable Minister of Home Affairs and the Traffic Chief, to at all times, ensure that minibuses with a certain amount of seats as required by the laws of Guyana must at all times be equipped with a Conductor.
Regards,
Mohamed .Z. Inshan
