Dear Editor,
Kaieteur News – It was noted for some time now that the water in the Demerara and Essequibo Rivers and in the Atlantic Ocean is tainted with some substance that is not normal. The contaminants are for sure stuff that has been dumped into the ocean and rivers. These are surely wastes from the ongoing offshore drilling and crude oil production. There is lots of waste generated in these activities, lots of drilling fluids, completion fluids, hole conditioning fluids. These are not solely oil-based fluids. They are chemicals and are comprised of synthetic stuff. So, there will be no visible oil slick as noted with oil spills.
Lots of the supply boats that traverse the shores of Guyana may bring these wastes and would release them. They will then take back other stuff to the drilling rigs and FPSO. One of the supply boats was observed last year going down the Essequibo River, many days traversing at very slow speed by myself and others. It may be offloading waste on its inbound trip. There were no supply ports in the Essequibo River. There should be stiff Maritime regulations for these supply boats and what they are dumping in the oceans and rivers. It should be noted that I am an Engineer. Did studies in Nova Scotia, Canada for the oil and gas industry, hence the above notes.
Thank you,
Suresh R. Seetaram
