Dear Editor,
I am trying to understand the picture you posted in today’s KN of a woman in NYC holding a sign that reads “ Mr. VP do your job, change the oil contract”.
Help me out here since I am trying to understand the logic behind the sign this lady is holding. Should the sign not read “ Exxon Mobil, please stop taking our oil for free. We want a fairer deal”?
I have a couple of questions:
1) Is the V.P. able to rip up the current contract with Exxon and force them to renegotiate a new one without retribution and not landing Guyana in deep legal and financial trouble, a situation much worse than they are with the present oil contract?
2) Is it not true that the former minister of Natural Resources, Raphael Trotman signed this ironclad contract with Exxon to exploit us?
If so, then why have you not focused on him and direct your fire at him? He being a lawyer signed a contract that was very bad for Guyana and its future. This contract has a Stability Clause and goes on for perpetuity, all in favor of Exxon. Not only that, this contract is so ironclad, there is not much Guyana can do about it on its own
The fact that Mr. Trotman is a lawyer and is responsible for this debacle, does this not reek of incompetence?
Did he not read the contract and consult with his fellow team members before agreeing to all of Exxon’s demands?
Was he bribed to agree to this contract and sell out this nation’s patrimony for nothing?
We want answers and would like to see you direct these questions to the right people.
We want to see you lay the blame where it belongs.
If you want this contract negotiated should you not be asking Exxon to play fair and renegotiate a fairer deal? Should your signs not be directed at Exxon?
You need to engage the help of the American people and its Government to convince Exxon what they are doing is wrong and unfair. You need to show Exxon they are discriminating against a third world nation and taking advantage of them
And while you are doing that, the former Minister of Resources needs to answer to the people of Guyana for what he did. He cannot be allowed a free pass.
Yours truly,
Dennis Balgobin
