Dear Editor,
The fact that Guyana has such high unemployment is not just a failing of governments. It is also an indictment of the unions in Guyana whom are deemed to be politically aligned.
Politically aligned unions prostitute themselves to politicians and peddle the party they support line of reasoning.
They would rather see a few people employed at relatively high wages rather than pushing to get more people employed.
Unions should also be looking to attract investment to create jobs which requires stability.
Unlike one union leader who told a company to pack up and leave Guyana if business was not profitable.
Politically aligned unions does a disservice to workers. But, the argument goes, the unions are necessary to negotiate a living wage. Really?
In what way does telling companies to pack up and leave benefit workers? Then, we have union leaders pushing for increased wages even when a company is not profitable.
With such high unemployment the politicians and unions should be looking to attract investment in Guyana.
The politicians, especially, should be tasked with job creation which requires a holistic job creation plan.
Failing that, nationwide welfare programme that targets unemployment should be established. Meaning unemployment benefits and working benefits. The benefits of working should exceed unemployment benefits.
I am sorry but the Guyana unions of today are living off past glories as opposed to dealing with present realities.
Yours truly,
Sean Ori
