Kaieteur News – The closing ceremony of the exercise of Operation Tradewinds was held at the National Stadium, yesterday. The ceremony started at approximately 9:00am.
Prime Minister, Brigadier (Ret’d) Mark Phillips, was present at the ceremony along with United States Ambassador of Guyana, Sarah-Ann Lynch; Senior Minister within the Office of the President with responsibility for Finance, Dr. Ashni Singh; Minister of Home Affairs, Robeson Benn; Minister of Tourism, Industry and Commerce, Oneidge Walrond; National Security Advisor to the President, Gerry Gouveia; Chief of Staff of the Guyana Defence Force, Brigadier Godfrey Bess; and several senior officers of the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) and the Guyana Police Force (GPF).
Tradewinds is a Caribbean-focused training programme designed to help participants better respond to natural disasters, land and maritime threats. Guyana was the host of this year’s exercise that was sponsored by the United States Southern Command (USSOUTHCOM).
The exercise commenced on Saturday June 12th, 2021. The security exercise is multi-national in nature with 17 nations involved. The nations that participated this year are Belize, Bermuda, Bahamas, Brazil, Canada, Columbia, Dominican Republic, France, Haiti, Mexico, Netherlands, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago, Guyana and the United States of America.
The ceremony started with the arrival of contingents and guests, followed by a parade march on. Remarks were then given by Major General Rafael A. Ribas, Deputy Commander for Mobilistion and Reserve Affairs in the United States and United States Ambassador of Guyana, Sarah Ann Lynch.
There was a presentation of gifts and certificates to all participants, followed by the parade march off and a closing cultural presentation which featured some of Guyana’s local artistes and their talents in various fields of the arts. The cultural presentation met performances from Poonam Singh, Jackie “Jaxx” Hanover, Vicadi Singh, Kwasi “Ace” Edmonson, Jumo Primo, Daniela Araujo and others.
