DEAR EDITOR,
The coronavirus pandemic is raging worldwide and almost two million people have died. Imagine the heartbreak for those families that have lost their loved ones. In Guyana, as you traverse the country, people have a lackadaisical attitude to the disease. The majority don’t wear mask, there is no social distancing and overcrowding is common in marketplace, schools, in the buses, among other places. The world is now relying on vaccines to rid us of this disease. Poor countries like us are left behind as the vaccines are grabbed up by wealthy countries and even some developing countries. The question then is why isn’t Guyana trying to strike bilateral arrangements with countries like India? A number of countries have written to the Indian Prime Minister for vaccine help. Guyana and India shares strong ties. India is making its Covishield by the Serum Institute which is AstraZeneca’s vaccine. This vaccine is already in use in the UK and will start in India by Friday. While we are waiting on the WHO for vaccines, which are not enough for our population, there is no harm in seeking help from the Indian government. I urge the government to have discussions with the Indian High Commissioner in Guyana in an effort to curb the disease in Guyana.
B. John
