“Blame game” between suspects in custody for cattle rearer’s death – motorcycle, spent shells recovered

As investigators begin to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the execution of cattle rearer Parmanand Lakram, called “Bachan”, 40 of Lot 52 Number 68 Village, Upper Corentyne, Berbice, two more suspects were arrested yesterday. A motorcycle reportedly used by them was retrieved.
Senior police sources have since revealed that after intense grilling of the main suspect that was arrested shortly after the incident, police were led to the two other men. The latter two led police to the location of the motorcycle.
However, Kaieteur News was told that the said motorcycle belonged to Lakram but “he would normally leave it parked with the keys in on the street where he resided at 68 Village”. It was from there the men reportedly took the motorcycle and ventured into the 67 Village backdam where Lakram was with his two workers.
But while police continue to question the men in custody, the two who were arrested yesterday are now playing a “blame game” over “who did what and who planned what”.
Commander Calvin Brutus assured that his ranks are working assiduously to garner the details of what took place.
He also disclosed that they have thus far confirmed that a 9 mm pistol was used to kill Lakram. Seven spent shells were also recovered from the scene.
Parmanand Lakram was riddled with bullets by two men on a motorcycle Friday morning at the Number 67 Village backdam.
He along with two workers had reportedly ventured to the location in his modified minibus to untie and load unbranded cows grazing, police said. Relatives had however said he visited the area to work the pumps.
It was shortly after that that the news got out of his execution style killing. His body was pumped with bullets by the perpetrators before they escaped.
Lakram’s two workers hid out in the thick vegetation after they heard the gunshots. The cattle rearer before he was shot, identified one of the men. He was found by his workers bracing the left rear tyre of the bus with blood oozing from the gunshot wounds about his body.
Police and one of the dead man’s brothers, Omesh Lakram, arrived at the scene shortly after.
Kaieteur News was told by a police source close to the investigation that Lakram was killed because he “would normally take unbranded cows that are not his and brand them as his own”. He was reportedly known to authorities for carrying out such acts.
Lakram leaves to mourn his four children, including one with special needs along with his wife and parents.
