DEAR EDITOR,
According to the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance, whose members include both India and Ghana (elections observers for 2020), the last 2 elections in Guyana has seen the number of registered voters surpass the population of eligible voters (voting age population). What is more astonishing is that the number of registered voters in the last election had grown substantially beyond the total eligible voting population by the magnitude of over 90,000 people. What is even more concerning is that the total for this upcoming election will suffer from a similar unrealistic increase. It is clear from the data that the number of registered voters surpasses the number of eligible voters based on the age of the voting population. It is also clear from the data that the registration data is questionable at best. Anyone who takes the time to cross-check this data will easily conclude that Guyana is on the verge of an unfair election. Therefore, in the pursuit of a fair election GECOM should take the prudent step of rechecking and cross-checking their database and other relevant databases to correct these discrepancies.
Best regards,
Mr. Jamil Changlee
Chairman
