Region Ten unveils official calendar of activities for Mash 2020

Through its Commemorative Committee, the Region Ten Democratic Council has released its Mashramani calendar of activities for 2020. In fact, it has been revealed that the Region has plans for immense pomp and fanfare to observe the nation’s 50th Republic Anniversary.

Deputy Regional Executive Officer (DREO), Maylene Stephen, disclosed that among the key activities will be: a cocktail event on February 6; Soca Semi Finals on February 8; Regional Talent Night on February 12; Flag raising ceremonies planned for Linden, Kwakwani and Ituni on February 22 and the National Costume and Float parade on February 23.
On the calendar of activities are the Linden Mashramani Float parade, Kwakwani Float parade, Mashramani Wet Fete, Children’s Dance, Poetry, Calypso and Costume competition and an awards ceremony to recognize persons who have played a pivotal role in the growth and development of Region Ten over the past 50 years.
Stephen said that while all of the activities planned are expected to see eager participation from the general public, she stressed that the honouring of residents who have made valuable and critical contributions over the years would be the hallmark of this year’s anniversary celebration.
“We are now discussing the awards ceremony as we are seeking to ensure that those who are selected to be honoured would have certainly merited it.
“We want to recognize those who would have made the greatest contribution. We are cognizant that a number of persons have been contributing and would have contributed, however we seek to recognize those that have made the greatest contribution,” Stephen added.
The DREO said that the excitement among residents is heating up. Several persons have been approaching her office to enquire how they can get involved in some of the activities.
She however appealed to residents who have an interest in being part of the Regional Road Parade to come into her office so as to get registered.
“We want the public to know that registration has commenced and that they can come into my office and get registered as registration has already commenced and they should do this as early as possible,” she urged.
Commenting on the awarding of persons who have made sterling and significant contribution to the growth and development of Region Ten over the past 50 years, the DREO said that a committee will be put in place to execute this event.
She stressed that they will be recognising the performances and/or contributions of several stalwarts from Region 10 with the view of determining those who would be honoured as part of the 50th anniversary. She noted that persons and organisations will be honoured in Education, Sports, Health, Community Development, Politics, Media, Religion, Agriculture and Public Service, stressing that while the list of persons who have contributed in these areas are very long, the region will review and select those who would have made the greatest impact.
“We are aware that Region Ten has been blessed with a number of persons who have truly contributed in a meaningful way to the holistic growth and development of the region in several ways, and that is what, through this award programme, we will seek to do, we will honour the best of the best as we will recognize our greatest from Linden, Kwakwani and Ituni,” she declared.
Stephen said that while a date for this event has not been confirmed, she is hopeful that it will be held in February. According to her too, plans are apace to have the presence of a number of government ministers and the president at the event.
She said that despite this event not being one of the original activities planned for the 2020 celebrations, she feels that with its timeliness and importance finding the required funding for it should not be too much of a challenge.
“There are some organizations and companies that we intend to approach for support and I am confident that we would be able to garner the required funding to execute this event as it is not only timely but very important,” she stressed.
