Investigators in Berbice seem to have hit a wall in connection with the brutal deaths of of hotel owner Vivekanand Brijbassi called “Veka” and his workman Harry Persaud Prashad called “Guana”.
There have been no arrests and no credible leads thus far in investigation dubbed as a “challenge” by investigating ranks. However, a senior police source told this publication that while there may be a challenge, they are working around the clock to crack the case and as such, are investigating several theories.
He added that one of the difficulties that have caused a slight hurdle is the “desolate location” of the hotel where the murders took place but “we are working and based on the scene of the crime, there are several theories that could be arrived at,” the source said. According to the police, there are no credible leads thus far.
When asked if they were made aware of the alleged previous break-ins, the official indicated that such information was not made available to him as yet but he will be looking into it “to see where that leads us.”
A post mortem is expected to be done on both bodies on Tuesday.
Vivekanand Brijbassi called “Veka” was the proprietor of the Sunsplash Hotel and Bar near the Number 62 Village beach shore. The building overlooks the beach and ocean. He constructed the hotel in 2000, fulfilling a dream that he had to have a hotel/resort by the beach.
But after years passed, business dwindled and he, his wife and two daughters migrated to Canada and left the business behind.
But he always dreamed of returning to Guyana to rehabilitate the hotel.
Every visit to local shores saw him doing some work on the premises and he returned earlier this month to put security systems in place.
The second victim, Harry Persaud Prashad called “Guana” started working as a caretaker at the hotel about two years ago. Brijbassi would always stay at the hotel during his visits.
The decomposed bodies of Bijbassi and Prashad were found in the upper flat of the building.
The victims were bound and parts of their limbs were hacked off.
Two toes from Brijbassi and one of Prashad’s feet were also missing. The injuries have led to suggestions that they were tortured. The entire building was also ransacked.
Regional Commander Calvin Brutus had told Kaieteur News that the extent of the decomposition suggests that they may have been dead for more than four days.
A friend of Brijbassi made the gruesome find when the hotel owner’s children sent him to check on their dad after failing to reach him by phone.
Brijbassi was last seen by his sister on the December 16, 2019, while Prashad was last seen some three weeks ago by relatives from Port Mourant.
Prashad’s body was identified by relatives on Saturday at the Bailey’s Funeral Home.
