Pregnant mothers and babies being admit in the Maternity Unit attached to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) are expected to be a lot more comfortable, due to the donation of several mattresses and incubators to the medical facility.
Kaieteur News understands that the equipment was donated last Thursday by a charitable organization, in light of the festive reason.
In an interview, a top official at the hospital, stated that although the maternity unit does not lack such equipment at this point in time, the donations of such items is at all time highly appreciated since beds and incubators are at all times being used in the maternity department.
“Within a month we deliver dozens of babies in this unit. This is the department where expecting mothers are admitted and as medical personnel we have to do our best to make sure persons being admitted in this unit are comfortable.”
At present, the Maternity Unit attached to the city hospital has over 300 beds and six incubators.
“There was a time when pregnant mother used to be worried when they have to come to GPHC to deliver
due to the situation we were going through then.
“Two pregnant mothers used to be on one single bed with their babies between them, but thankfully times have changed and things are way better at the city hospital,” the source continued.
According to sources, internal surveys that were lately done on the hospital maternity unit shows that with the abundance of necessary equipment; patients feel more comfortable about being admitted in the unit.
This in turn eases the pressure from expecting mothers.
For the past four months the board of directors at the city hospital has implemented several new programmes in the hospital curriculum with the aim of offering new and upgraded services to persons accessing health care at the medical facility.
Programmes that were implemented and completed in the past six months are the health and family care programmes for all young and first time mothers admitted at the unit; Attitude improvement programmes completed by doctors and senior medical personnel at the medical facility; and language programmes.
A total of 40 nurses working in different departments at the hospital completed this programme on Friday.
