Dear Editor,
I have always held the position that the tremendous oil discovered in Guyana, though a potential blessing for the country and peoples of Guyana, can and possibly be a curse for us due to the overreaching hand of the American company, ExxonMobil, and our gross lack of experience in oil, period.
I was not at all surprised to read in the Sunday’s edition of Kaieteur News, that they, ExxonMobil, showed their hand of absolute and total disdain and disrespect for us, as others, so-called third world countries, by handing out contracts to another entity without Government’s approval.
This company has a history of this kind of well-documented behaviour in other oil producing countries and when their disrespect runs into much stronger regulatory roadblocks than Guyana’s to their nefarious behaviours, they resort to the tried and true- bribe their way to secure that all important advantage.
The bottom line for this company is profit, and keeping their investors and top executives happy at the expense of the host country.
They enter these countries with years of experience and technical know-how.
They are here to rescue the ignorant natives.
This mindset has permeated, captured and taken over their entire being that even if a glimmer of right thinking or fair play tries to emerge, that God-like mindset steps in. The relationship must always be that of master to servant wrapped in a neat little package marked greed/profit.
In addition to the foregoing, this company is connected by the hip to the present rulers of America headed by an inept, incompetent, immoral so called President Donald Trump.
An example of this connection is Rex Wayne Tillerson, since fired by Trump as Secretary of State. He was once CEO of said ExxonMobil from 2006 to 2017.
Can any right-thinking individual not believe that the goings on in Guyana are not attracting the highest levels of the US government?
That translates to the invisible hand of policy as it relates to our country’s oil- we will be directed by and from America.
If you doubt this, ask our neighbour Venezuela and take note of the social disruption presently engulfing that country with the ultimate goal of regime change, replacing the current, legally-elected President with a handpicked ‘Yes Man’.
This is orchestrated by a country that runs around the world spouting the virtues of democracy.
It is a sad testimony that the political impasse our erstwhile leaders are engaged in will not allow them to put personal ambitions aside and consider the wider picture- that of the benefits of our resources for all our citizens and not allow greedy players like ExxonMobil exploit our divisions, both ethnic and political.
Isn’t it time we strive to live our motto- “One People, One Nation, One Destiny”?
A people divided among themselves cannot stand and are ready for exploitation.
Rusal found that out and are packing up with their/our profits in their greedy, disrespectful pockets.
