Guyanese Avinda Kishore won the Longest Drive while Neville Pascal of Barbados took the Nearest to the Pin title on the second and final day of the Bridgestone Guyana Open Golf tournament which concluded on Sunday last at the Lusignan Golf Course.
The tournament saw Avinash Persaud winning his 10th title, withstanding stiff challenges from Avinda Kishore, Alfred Mentore, Kassim Khan and Aleem Hussain in the Championship Flight.
Guyanese Julia Stephenson who now lives in Barbados emerged winner of the Ladies Flight, winning by one stroke over her nearest competitor, Shanella London.
Despite his performance being over shadowed by Persaud, Kishore was the overall Best Net winner in the 0-9 Flight with 141. Avinash Persaud (142) placed second and Alfred Mentore (142) finished third.
Mike Mangal (145) and Aleem Hussain (146) also turned in outstanding performances. Avinash Persaud won the Best Gross with 146 ahead of Avinda Kishore (149) and Franklin Stephenson (157) of Barbados in that order.
In the 10 – 18 Flight, overall Best Net winners were 1st – Rakesh Harry (130), 2nd – Satrohan Tiwari (134), and 3rd – George Bulkan (142). Overall Best Gross winners in this category were Satrohan Tiwari (166), Rakesh Harry (166), and Aasrodeen Shaw (168).
In the 19 – 28 Flight, overall Best Net and Best Gross winners were Imtiaz Subhan (134/178), Dr. Philbert London (138/180) and Miguel Oviedo (145/201). In the Seniors Flight, Best Net and Best Gross winners were; 1st – Tulsieram Persaud (151/199), 2nd – Maurice Solomon (151/201) and 3rd – AbdoolAzeez (155)/211).
In the Ladies Flight, overall Best Winners were; 1st – Shanella London (149), 2nd – Dr. Joaan Deo (153) and 3rd – Julia Stephenson (155). Best Gross winners were; 1st – Julia Stephenson (177), 2nd – Shanella London (177) and 3rd – Christine Sukhram (180).With more than 40 major companies in support of the golfing event, it was sure to be a weekend to remember and the level of play did not disappoint with the upsets coming where least expected.
LGC President Aleem Hussain thanked the players and supporters including Anwar, Troy Cadogan, Guillermo Escarraga, Rudy Ramalingum, Aditka Persaud, George Bulkan, Panko Ramsundar along with the members of the Executive for making the event and his term in office a success.
He was especially grateful to the sponsors who have supported the vision of bringing golf to new heights in Guyana and praised the media who he said has done a magnificent job of promoting the sport.
The tournament Champions were decided by the Best Gross overall in the Male and Female categories.
