The various Zones in Georgetown are getting into competition gear as the National Schools’ Track & Field Championships competition date gets closer. Yesterday, at the Police Sporst Club Ground, Campbellville Secondary carted off most of the spoils in the East Zone Inter School championship with all their athletes finishing first in the sprint races while Trevon Hamer won the Boys’ Under-16 800m.
Under the tutelage of Physical Education Master, Christopher Gaskin, who was first accredited as a Level One Athletics Coach in 1994, it was no surprise that Campbellville dominated their competitors.
Stafon Roach won the Boys’ Under-18 200m and 400m sprints while Isaiah Black copped the 100m and 200m Under-20 races. Malika Abrams won the Girls’ Under-16 100m. In the Girls’ Under 18 showdown, Tiea Lowe copped the sprint treble after breezing through her opponents in the 100m, 200m and 400m races.
Lowe, who finished second in the Girls’ 100m and third in the 200m races at ‘Nationals’ last year, shared with Kaieteur Sport that she feels great this season and is confident of going all the way at the National Track & Field Championships that will be hosted at the National Track & Field Center (NTFC), Leonora, next month.

However, Lowe and her schoolmates will have to compete at next Thursday’s East District Inter-Zone Championships which is also slated for Police Club Ground, Eve Leary. Last year’s runners-up at Nationals, South Zone (District 12), will begin their ‘Champion of Champions’ Track and Field competition to select the top athletes who will help push all the way for the overall title.
The Champion of Champions event has replaced the Inter School and Inter Zone championships with all of the schools in the District coming together to compete in one competition to shorten the selection process of athletes to represent the district. (Calvin Chapman)
