Twenty-four-year-old Wayne Anthony Chester, called ‘Sharky’, of Lot 236 Section C, Block Y, Diamond Housing Scheme, who was on trial before Principal Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus in the Georgetown Magistrate’s Courts, was yesterday committed to stand trial in the High Court for murder.
The charge stated that on December 20, 2017, at Craig, East Bank Demerara, Chester murdered Purcell Moore, during the course of a robbery.
During yesterday’s court proceeding, Principal Magistrate Marcus ruled that after going through the evidence she found sufficient evidence against Chester and he (Chester) will go on trial at the next practicable sitting of the Demerara Assizes.
According to information, Moore was returning home from a shop when Chester who was armed with a handgun confronted him and the two men got into an argument. They then got into a scuffle and several rounds were discharged at Moore.
Moore was then rushed to the Diamond Diagnostic Centre, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Chester was previously sentenced by Magistrate Rondell Weever to a total of 14 years and six months in jail after finding him guilty of several charges.
It is alleged that on January 6, 2019, at Conciliation Drive, Tucville, Georgetown, while being in the company of another and being armed with an unlicensed gun, Chester robbed Bowen Cromwell of $512,600 in cash and jewellery.
It was further alleged that on the same date and at the same place, he allegedly damaged two car parts, valued at a total of $85,000, which belonged to Cromwell.
The defendant, Chester, was also charged with discharging a loaded firearm with the intent to wound Cromwell, having a pistol in his possession without being the holder of a firearm licence and being in possession of unlicensed ammunition.
At the end of the trial, Magistrate Weever ruled that there was sufficient evidence presented by the prosecutor and Chester was sentenced to a total of 14 years and six months for the five charges. The sentences will concurrently.
