In 2016, the Mayor and City Council (M&CC) embarked on a major rehabilitation project to upgrade the Kitty Market. The work was divided into two phases, and the first stage is expected to be completed in the next three months.
On September 19, a site visit and assessment were conducted by officials from the Mayor and City Council (M&CC).
In an interview with the Department of Public Information (DPI), City Engineer attached to the Mayor and City Council, Engineer Department, Rasheed Kellman provided some insight on the work which is 90% complete.
“Phase one cost $140M. However, an extra $17M was approved by the Ministry of Communities two months ago, to speed up the construction process. This phase entails finishing all the ground floor works, the two exits, walls and staircase,” Kellman explained, adding that the second phase of the construction will cost $100M.
A newly constructed Community Hall and a branch office of the Guyana Revenue Authority occupy the top floor of the market.
Markets and Public Health Chairman, Tricia Richards said phase two of the project will see the market outfitted with a generator, a cold storage area and 38 stalls to accommodate the vendor’s plying their wares. “We have received many applications from the general public, persons who wish to operate a stall in the market. However, we will give priority to those vendors who occupied stalls in the market previously.”
Richards also disclosed that funds were allotted after a tendering process, to carry out upgrades to the Bourda, Stabroek and East Ruimveldt Markets.
