DEAR EDITOR,
It is indeed sad to learn of the passing of Guyanese-born British businessman, Robert William Collymore, who rose to the top of the corporate ladder as Chief Executive Officer of telecommunications giant Safaricom based in Kenya.
I first learnt of his passing whilst viewing the CCTV world news and it struck me that a Guyanese-born had risen to such great heights in the field of global telecommunications.
I have always held the view that Guyanese are as talented as any in every field of human endeavour. The late Robert Collymore had certainly lived up to such expectations. He made it right up to the top of the corporate ladder for which he gained the recognition and respect of the Government and people of Kenya and beyond.
It is a good feeling to know that Guyanese are making it to the top of the professional ladder and even though I cannot say that I knew of the late Robert Collymore prior to his passing, I do experience a sense of loss given the high quality of his contribution in the field of telecommunications. According to media reports, despite his achievements, he remained humble, a true mark of greatness.
May his soul rest in peace!
