On Sunday June 23, the Lions clubs of Georgetown D’Urban Park hosted a joint Installation and Induction ceremony at the Police Officers’ Mess, Eve Leary.
The ceremony saw a new Board of Directors being installed to manage the affairs of the clubs for the fiscal year 2019/2020. The occasion also witnessed the induction of five new lions.
Lion Simone Beckles, was installed as the president of the Club with Lions Yvette Fiedkou and Gail Henry as Club Secretary and Treasurer respectively.
Beckles, who was crowned Ms. Guyana Renaissance in 2007, is an Assistant Commissioner at the Guyana Revenue Authority and has been a lion for over ten years.
She will commence her term as Captain of the SS D’Urban Park on July 1. The club is referred to as the SS D’Urban Park by its members – a term bestowed by the late Deborah Backer, who was the Charter President of the club in 1994.
Lion Simone Beckles, in her address to the meeting which was attended by Volda Lawrence, Minister of Public Health and Annette Ferguson, Minister with responsibility for Housing, outlined her theme for the fiscal year 2019/2020 “Fashion our hearts to Serve and Empower Communities”.
Lions Club International is the world largest service club organization with 1.4 million members in more than 46,000 clubs. The organization provides valuable service in 210 countries and geographic areas around the globe.
Since 1917, Lions’ clubs have aided the blind and visually impaired and made a strong commitment to community service and serving youth throughout the world, sentiments expressed by Lion Beckles in her acceptance speech along with commitments for the execution of a STRIDES walk to promote Diabetes Awareness, a health clinic, expansion of the clubs feeding program and a possibility of sponsoring a Leo club. The club has a branch club at Linden with Lion Alexis Billey as its president.
