On Thursday last [June 20, 2019], American based Guyanese, Dave Narine, the owner and founder of Dave West Indian Imports Inc. located in Ozone Park, New York, was the recipient of yet another prestigious award for his laudable business exploits.
The award, which came compliments of the Asian American Business Development Centre, is one that recognises 50 outstanding Asian Americans in business. Moreover, the accolade is dubbed the ‘2019 Outstanding 50 Asian Americans in Business Award’.
At a Gala Award Dinner held at Cipriani Wall Street, situated at 55 Wall Street, New York City, Narine, and other awardees, received their tangible recognition.
The black tie affair, now in its 18th year, has become one of the most prestigious events in the Asian American business community and is a night of celebration.
Traditionally, award recipients attend the event and participate at the Gala dinner to share this honour with family, friends and colleagues.
Moreover, the event is designed to enable the Business Centre, a non-profit organisation, t
o host a spectacular event that acknowledges the success of each business recognised in the presence of their peers and among over 600 government, business and civic leaders.
Narine, who has been responsible for running all facets of his business for nearly three decades, has been supplying West Indian products from Guyana, and the Caribbean at large, to the US. He is credited with leading design branding and implementation of all sales and marketing strategies to create a multi-million-dollar enterprise.
He opened markets in New York, then Maryland and across the US. His products are sold in stores including Walmart and more recently Amazon.
Born to parents who were teachers, Narine migrated to the US in 1986. He is married with two children. His prior jobs as an accountant and customs officer prepared him for securing his dream of establishing his own business.
It was in recognition of the fact that there was a lack of available Caribbean products that the idea of Dave West Indian Imports was born.
As an outstanding businessman, Narine was also the recipient of the Maryland Cornerstone Award for Local Business Excellence in recognition of his contributions to the state’s economy. He has been giving back to society evident by his sponsorship of many cricket teams and tournaments including the Joseph ‘Reds’ Pereira Cricket Foundation.
He has also been honoured by the Cricket Board for his contribution to cricket in Guyana and the US, and is a member of the USA Cricket Association. His charitable work also extends to hosting programmes to feed those housed at orphanages as well as sending food hampers to the elderly and less fortunate in the US and Guyana.
