According to the Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Act businesses and organisations have four days to report non-fatal accidents while fatal accidents should be reported immediately.
However some entities seem to have a problem with complying with these regulations. Gwyneth King, the OSH Consultant said that the purpose of the Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Department is to improve the safety and the work environment, with the emphasis of preventative rather than curative measures.
“And so to this extent what we have been doing is inspecting work places. We have been investigating work accidents, [as] work places are expected according to the OSH Act to report accidents. If it’s a non-fatal accident, they have four days in which to report it, if it’s a fatality it’s immediately,” she said.
King went on to say that they are doing training for workers. They have taken the training to the place of work and they have been trying to equip the Safety and Health Committees. Employers were encouraged to establish these committees in workplaces that employ 20 or more persons.
With regards to those that employ fewer than 20 persons, they are expected to have a safety and health representative appointed.
Employees are encouraged to call on the OSH, as they are willing to train them and assist in them observing proper safety protocols.
Those employees trained will be equipped with the knowledge to inspect the workplace, investigate accidents and report back to the OSH so that they will have a constant inflow of accurate information; hence they will know where they are lacking when it comes to monitoring and how to handle the issue.
