Dear Editor,
Guyana Government officials continue to encourage our diaspora to return to help to serve the country.
In the first place, many in the diaspora are either unable or unwilling to respond to the invitation.
However, when the few who decide to return do get here, the whole atmosphere becomes quite unwelcoming.
Many times, when a competent and qualified re-migrant begins to settle in and to deal with some of the very impediment to development, they would meet a barrage of criticisms and ridicule. Very often, this antagonism comes from persons far less qualified or competent than the re-migrant
Like the writer of letter to the editor on Wednesday, I have a similar observation of the Linden Project, done by NICIL.
For years, the Watooka House was kept in a shabby and run down condition. No government agency seemed to be able to find the will or resource to fix it.
Within a matter of months of taking over the office, the CEO of NICIL, Mr. Colvin Heath-London has renovated the Watooka House, and the old Train Station with such class and finish that even his worse critics would be hard pressed to find fault.
The same can-do spirit was what Mr. Heath-London displayed while NICIL had responsibility for GUYSUCO.
It is understood that Mr. Heath-London was determine to help to stream-line the sugar industry and put in place systems that would improve the overall efficiency of the corporation.
Independent analysis has shown that GUYSUCO’s structure is unacceptable.
The top is too heavy and while the industry has become a drain on the nation’s coffers the senior personnel do take home some large pay checks.
After relentless efforts and much misinformation, the senior officials got rid of London, but the problems have only grown worse.
It is understood that this is what London attempted to fix, but those with self-interests, the main beneficiaries, wrote, criticised, complained and lobbied to get rid of him. He is no longer there but the sugar industry is just limping along while its life’s blood is being sucked away by people whose interest in helping this administration to succeed, is highly questionable.
A few days ago the Prime Minister and other government officials were again in New York. Again they were encouraging Guyanese to come home. I hope they understand that we need to create a more professional and welcoming atmosphere, that when the people do get here, they are allowed to bring to bear the professional skills for the development of the homeland.

(Kaieteur News) – One of the great weaknesses of our politics is that too often a good idea becomes a bad idea simply because it was proposed by the other side. Hard Truths by GHK Lall (Kaieteur News) – I feel as though I am shortchanging my fellow American, U.S. Ambassador, Nicole D. Theriot. I take my hat off to her, regret there’s only one to offer.
