DEAR EDITOR,
The David Granger administration has erred gravely in not understanding how democracy operates. It is impossible for a democratically elected government to trash its people and survive either in government or at the polls. The Coalition Administration has usurped Guyana’s Democracy and is NO LONGER A DEMOCRATICALLY ELECTED AND FUNCTIONING GOVERNMENT.
The Institutions of Democracy Guyana has lost so far:
1. The Independence of the Guyana Elections Commission, with the unilateral appointment of the GECOM Chairman by the President.
2. Our Courts, in light of the obviously prejudiced decision of the Court of Appeal.
The Coalition Administration initially accepted the verdict of the decision of Parliament that a no-confidence motion had been successfully passed against it on December 21, 2018, and that it should resign and hold elections within the period of three months stipulated by our Constitution.
That Guyanese hold with derision the decision of the Court of Appeal to overturn the ruling of the Chief Justice that the No Confidence Motion passed on December 21st, 2018 was valid, and that the coalition administration should resign and call elections, that our individual and collective recognition that the opinion of the Court of Appeal lacks reasonable justification, can realize only one conclusion: That the Coalition Administration has usurped our democracy and is no longer a democratically elected and functioning government.
The Democratic National Congress had long ago predicted that Guyana was heading for a national crisis of government because of the coalition administration’s wilful disregard for the will of Guyanese and its insistence on adopting welfare degrading policies, which severely damage our economic prospects in the long term. We had warned of the real possibility of having the PPP back in government as a consequence of the Coalition’s consistent failures in almost every domain of its policy decisions, and that it is was important that we prepare an alternative government or slip back into the corruption and lawlessness of Jagdeo and the PPP.
Time has come to a head, and unless we make serious decisions soon, the unpalatable future we know is sure to greet us at the next elections will be realized. We now have no time to think and dally. We either act or face the sure consequences of our indecision.
We urge Guyanese to seriously reflect on what we consider the unfolding of a crisis in governance within the Coalition Administration with the recent rehiring of Mr. Duncan. David Granger is on course to becoming a Tyrant and his administration a Dictatorship. Guyana has had enough of this in our generation.
Yours faithfully,
Craig Sylvester
Democratic National Congress
