DEAR EDITOR,
The spectre of early elections has never been more evident. Following last December’s historic no-confidence vote in the National Assembly, it can be deduced that Guyana’s political arena will never be the same again.
Traditional politics has been kicked through the door.
We are preparing for one of the most critical of elections in this country’s history. It will be hard fought and bloody and likely from the current configurations, there will likely be no side that can command more than 50 percent, unless there is something more that can be offered on the table to the people who are clearly weary of the same promises.
The Coalition since coming to office in 2015 has not been given a smooth ride. An Opposition that has been in power for 23 years will never easily give up. This is never more evident in the strongholds of Berbice where sabotage at the NDCs and drainage and irrigation levels are prevalent, to make the administration take blame for flooding, among other things.
Recently, in the media, it has come to light that there is a fight in the Alliance For Change for nominations to the Prime Minister’s position. It is Khemraj Ramjattan and Moses Nagamootoo, who are both from Berbice who are the frontrunners.
As can be recalled, the large faction- the A Partnership For National Unity (APNU) by virtue of the Herdmanston Accord, has the presidential post.
The Coalition has to come good if it intends to do well and take back the presidency in the coming elections.
The Berbice and indigenous people’s vote will be key. In 2015, and I dare the AFC spinners to prove otherwise, thousands of Berbicians from Black Bush and other areas, disillusioned with the situation of the Donald Ramotar administration, decided to give the Coalition a chance.
The goodwill seemed to have been lost as both Ramjattan and Nagamootoo forgot the voters in the Berbice.
The subsequent local government elections are all but testimony of how Berbician perceive the AFC.
Fortunately, there seems to be hope. The Coalition is struggling to find a PM candidate who is both credible and respected. He or she will likely have to be Indian. The experiment of Nagamootoo and Ramjattan would be playing Russian roulette for the Coalition.
In the past three years, one man has managed to bring goodwill to the AFC and the Coalition in Berbice.
Gobin Harbhajan has commanded the respect of Berbicians and his appointment as the PM’s Representative to Region 6 was a wise move that has paid dividends.
I have had many clashes with Harbhajan over issues but he sees no party colour and would call a spade a spade. The many who visit his office and others who pass information to him is testimony of the respect that he commands.
He has been sitting on the boards of the Regional Democratic Council, at the Skeldon Electricity Inc., Guyana Post Office Corporation and Vice Chairman for the Board of Guardian.
Yours truly,
Mike Singh Sr.
