In promoting and supporting children with ‘Special Educational Needs and Disabilities’ the Department of Education- Region Six suc
cessfully hosted a two-day training programme, which culminated on Friday at the St. Aloysius Primary School, New Amsterdam, Berbice.
This workshop was geared to provide professional training and development to teachers under the theme “Effective teaching methodology for improved student performance”. The organizers hope it will help teachers to better plan and cater for the various needs of learners and at the same time improve performance of students at the national levels.
The event was one that catered for teachers of the primary and secondary levels in the region along with teachers from the special needs schools.
On the first day of the forum, Regional Education Officer (ag) Ms. Bhagmatie LaCruz, delivered the keynote address. She welcomed a gathering of over 60 participants that were registered for the two-day seminar.
She highlighted the need for teachers to be more committed to the profession and to make adequate use of the training sessions by implementing the teaching methodologies learnt in their classrooms, and so meet the needs of learners to improve performance.
The training sessions were facilitated by two Education Officers from the SEN Unit, Mr. Wainwright McIntosh and Ms. Hulda Fraser, with support from Dr. Andrea Deeren from the New Amsterdam Psychiatric Hospital who specifically dealt with ‘ Stress and Teachers’ Wellbeing.’
Teachers were exposed to an in-depth training on Differentiated Instruction, Learning Disabilities, Literacy Instruction for Diverse Learners among other subjects. They were also exposed to interactive sessions by making presentations based on teaching strategies, special education, positive behaviour support intervention and teachers’ welfare matters.
Education officer, Mr. Wainwright McIntosh, stated that he was pleased with how teachers were open to new ideas.
“Teachers were generally receptive to all of the concepts presented and it was really an honour working with our enthusiastic Educators from both the Primary and Secondary schools”, said McIntosh.
Mr. McIntosh said that the topics addressed by Ms.Hulda Fraser and himself were geared to equip educators with specific skills and strategies of the diverse learners within classrooms and by extension the school.
He also expressed satisfaction with the presentations done by the teachers and is certain they will make a difference in the academic performance of learners.
“The presentations done by the participants were an indication of their willingness to bridge the gap between theory and practice.
I am very much confident that teachers are prepared to work assiduously to enhance the academic performance of our learners in the Region,” stated McIntosh.
