After about two hours of deliberations, a jury by a verdict of 10 not guilty to two guilty, yesterday acquitted Conway Gray who was accused of raping a three-year-old girl.
The proportionate not guilty verdict saw the charge being dismissed against Gray by trial Judge Jo-Ann Barlow, who is at present sitting in the Sexual Offences Courtroom at the High Court in Georgetown.
The charge against Gray, who was represented by Attorneys-at-Law Maxwell McKay, stated that on June 19, 2015, in the county of Demerara, he engaged in sexual penetration with the underage girl.
Upon his arraignment, Gray pleaded not guilty to the indictment which was presented by State Prosecutor Seeta Bishundial.
Before informing Gray that he was free to go, Justice Barlow, took the opportunity to offer some advice to the former rape accused. The judge told Gray that the jury’s verdict means that he is now free of the crime.
The Judge urged him to see the outcome of his trial as a second chance, and to also motivate him to not want to return to the Court system.
Moreover, the Judge urged the prosecution to continue to liaise with the relevant authorities to provide support to the young girl, who she said, is now much older to understand what yesterday’s verdict means.
